The Moonstone, published in 1868 by Wilkie Collins, is widely celebrated as the first modern detective novel in the English language. Originally serialized in Charles Dickens's magazine All the Year Round, it established many of the core conventions of the mystery genre, including the "locked-room" puzzle and the use of red herrings.
