Père Goriot (also known as Old Goriot or Father Goriot) is an 1835 novel by Honoré de Balzac and a cornerstone of his massive literary cycle, La Comédie humaine. Set in Paris in 1819, it is famous for being the first novel in which Balzac used his signature technique of "reappearing characters," where figures from one story show up in another.
